About this centre

We are Gemma and Steve, and we run Wild Hearts Hogspital, caring for sick, injured, orphaned and vulnerable hedgehogs in our local community.
Our rescue began from a love of these incredible little animals and a determination to give them the chance they deserve. What started with helping individual hedgehogs has grown into a dedicated rescue where every hog is treated as an individual, given the time and care they need, and supported on their journey back to the wild whenever possible.

We care for hedgehogs who need help, from tiny orphaned hoglets needing frequent feeds, to underweight hedgehogs, injuries, infections, parasites and other health problems.

We are a home-based rescue, which means our hedgehogs receive hands-on care, monitoring and lots of individual attention throughout their rehabilitation. It also means that we are there, 24/7 for the hedgehogs.

We believe in learning and doing things properly. We continually develop our knowledge, use appropriate equipment and diagnostic support, carry out our own faecal examination and diagnostics where appropriate, and work alongside experienced rescues and veterinary professionals when our hedgehogs need additional care.

Our ultimate goal is always rehabilitation and release. When a hedgehog is fit, healthy and ready, we want nothing more than to see them return to the wild where they belong.

Every little life matters to us. Some arrive needing nothing more than a safe place, warmth and food. Others arrive critically unwell and require weeks of intensive care. Whatever their starting point, they are all given the same commitment, patience and love.
